Millcreek Ordinance

As you may know, on Tuesday, April 27th 2010 Millcreek Township Supervisors voted to adopt an ordinance making it illegal to access EmergyCare in an emergency using our seven-digit number, 870-1000. If you have been following this issue, you know that EmergyCare has been serving Millcreek Township residents for 25 years, longer than any other paramedic service! It is our desire, to not only continue providing the highest level of care and service to our more than 4,000 members in the Township but, to fight to protect their right to choice as well! You should know:

- With this ordinance, the closest ambulance will not be sent to life-threatening emergencies in Millcreek Township! In the month of April, there were at least two confirmed instances of life-threatening emergencies where EmergyCare was blocks away and Millcreek Paramedic Service was dispatched instead from a much greater distance away.

- This ordinance not only prohibits Millcreek residents from choosing EmergyCare in an emergency, it threatens to fine them up to $1,000 if they do call 870-1000.

- According to the new ordinance, if you request EmergyCare in Millcreek Township, your request will not be honored.

- We believe this this ordinance is a violation of the First Amendment and Pennsylvania’s Emergency Medical Services Law. It also constitutes a interference with EmergyCare’s existing membership contracts with Millcreek residents.

- In response to this new ordinance, EmergyCare will file a complaint in Erie County Court on Monday, May 3rd, requesting an injunction.  We will ask that the ordinance be put on hold until the hearing is held and a judge makes a ruling on its legality.

- EmergyCare wants to put the interests of patients in Millcreek Township first! We believe the closest ambulance should be sent in life-threatening emergencies. We also believe that allowing choice is morally and ethically the right thing to do. What is more, we believe it is the lawful thing to do.
