Summer in Northwestern Pennsylvania is a time for lake days, festivals, road trips, and time outdoors with family and friends. But for emergency medical services (EMS), it’s also one of the busiest times of the year.
At EmergyCare, our crews see firsthand how quickly a fun summer day can turn into an emergency. The good news? Many of the most common summer-related emergencies are preventable.
Here’s what our EMS professionals want you to know to stay safe this July and all summer long.
Heat-Related Illnesses: Know the Signs
High temperatures and humidity can lead to serious conditions like heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Watch for:
-
Heavy sweating
-
Dizziness or fainting
-
Nausea
-
Confusion or altered mental status
Stay safe by:
-
Drinking plenty of water throughout the day
-
Taking breaks in the shade or air conditioning
-
Avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat
Call 911 immediately if someone shows signs of heat stroke, such as confusion, loss of consciousness, or a body temperature above 103°F.
Water Safety Matters More Than You Think
Whether you’re at Presque Isle, a backyard pool, or out on the boat, water-related emergencies can happen quickly and silently.
Keep in mind:
-
Drowning doesn’t always look dramatic; it can be quick and quiet
-
Children and inexperienced swimmers are especially at risk
-
Even strong swimmers can experience fatigue or cramping
Simple precautions:
-
Always supervise children near water
-
Wear life jackets when boating
-
Avoid swimming alone
Bites, Stings, and Allergic Reactions
Warmer weather brings bees, wasps, ticks, and other insects. While many bites and stings are minor, some can cause severe allergic reactions.
Watch for signs of a serious reaction:
-
Difficulty breathing
-
Swelling of the face or throat
-
Hives or widespread rash
-
Dizziness or collapse
Call 911 right away if these symptoms occur.
Fireworks and Holiday Injuries
Fourth of July celebrations are a highlight of the summer, but they also come with risk.
Stay safe by:
-
Leaving fireworks to trained professionals whenever possible
-
Keeping a safe distance from active fireworks
-
Never allowing children to handle fireworks
Even small devices can cause burns, eye injuries, or worse.
Travel and Traffic Safety
Summer means more people on the road, heading out on vacations, going to cookouts, and attending community events.
Remember:
-
Always wear a seatbelt
-
Never drive impaired or distracted
-
Allow extra travel time during busy weekends
Even small choices can make a big difference in preventing serious accidents.
When in Doubt, Call 911
You don’t have to make the call alone. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s always okay to call 911.
Early action can save lives, and our teams are here 24/7 to help when you need us most.
